ALL EYES ON THE JUDICIARY: JUSTICE IN HIGH DEMAND AS NIGERIA’S FATE HANGS IN A BALANCE.

ALL EYES ON THE JUDICIARY: JUSTICE IN HIGH DEMAND AS NIGERIA’S FATE HANGS IN A BALANCE.

Global attention will once again be drawn to Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria, on the 6th of September as the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), tomorrow, delivers its final verdict on the highly controversial February elections.

Tinubu who coasted to victory on the heels of marked violence, alleged rigging, and technical abnormalities, continues to remain on the edge against an opposition argument too solid to downplay.

Part of the accusations include a 1979 forged certificate obtained from Chicago State University, a civil forfeiture record related to Narcotics peddling, and the legitimacy of Tinubu’s victory given his failure to clinch a legally required win in the country’s capital.

INTEGRITY TEST BEFORE NIGERIA’S SUPREME COURT JUSTICES AND THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM OVER 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION PETITIONS

Yesterday, the Nigerian Department for State Security (DSS) released a suspicious public notice discouraging alleged planned protests across the nation. In the same vein, the tribunal also surprisingly announced plans to televise the final verdict after vehemently kicking against such over the past five months. Though unclear, many Nigerians believe both actions are a ploy to prevent thousands of pro-oppositionists from gathering outside the court.

Nigeria still holds the world record for the highest number of poor people and out-of-school children. Over 30% of its 200 million citizens live on less than one dollar a day. Their condition is now worsened by Tinubu’s irrational decision to inflate energy costs by 300% and appease affected citizens with a few grams of grain.

For these suffering Nigerians, tomorrow’s outcome is crucial. A salt to Nigeria’s sore travails under Buhari, many decry Tinubu’s self-centered, cronyistic leadership as destructive for a Nigeria already in dire straits. The fidgeting president with no named foreign affairs advisor has sought to accrue a global reputation by puppeteering to the dictates of Western neo-colonialism. The latest is his quest to plunge Africa into another wide-scale regional conflict at Niger.

The stakes are high. Nigeria cannot afford to field another incompetent president for the next eight years. All eyes are on the judiciary.
