WEST SILENT AS MEDITERRANEAN BOAT MISHAP DROWN ANOTHER 50 MIGRANTS

More than 50 persons have now been confirmed dead in two separate migrant boat accidents off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy. The drowned migrants, consisting of women and infants mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa, had sought to cross over to Italy from the coastal city of Sfax, Tunisia, in search of a better living.

The world’s largest concentration of poor people reside in Sub-Saharan Africa—a region plagued with insecurity, Western exploitation and toxic neo-colonialism. Poor and in search of a better life overseas, Africans navigate through the scorching Sahara heat, desert pirates, deadly organ trafficking syndicate, and a growing government-induced racial discrimination in the countries like Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt who consider them a contaminative threat to the makeup of their society.

Legal immigration routes have become too expensive for these migrants who mostly live on less than $2 daily and often have to save up for years to undertake the risky illegal route. The Italian authorities say illegal crossings have doubled over the last 12 months.

Sadly, the United Nations, the World Bank and developed nations like the US, UK and Germany appear unfazed by the worrisome crisis largely fuelled by their heavy-handed political disruption and cruel exploitation of natural resources in Africa.
